Opportunities to Serve

"The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Matthew 9:37-38

Join our workers in the field in ministry to our community and our world...

Whitfield UMC Food Pantry -

Whitfield UMC offers a food bag program for our area neighbors who need a little help getting through the week.  Bags are filled with canned food items, cereal, powdered milk, paper and soap products, etc.  Donations are accepted at any time, but regular collection boxes are available on the 1st Sunday of each month when we celebrate Holy Communion.

Upward Basketball -

Whitfield is a proud sponsor of Upward Basketball, bringing physical fitness and spirtual guidance to hundreds of kids and their families.  Our basketball season starts in January with games beginning at 8:00 a.m., each Saturday.  Our congregation supports Upward by providing coaches, score keepers, concessions, devotionals, and cheering crowds.  Join us for a game, or two, and watch the pride and joy of a child scoring a basket, or simply remembering to dribble.  For more information on this program, or how you can volunteer, call the church office (334-281-2467) and leave a message for Jeff Rice, Upward program director.  January - February, games on Saturdays in the Sheppard Center.

Family Promise -

Four times each year, Whitfield UMC, along with several other churches in our area, hosts Family Promise, an interfaith hospitality program that offers housing for low-income families in need.  Volunteers prepare and serve meals, visit with the families and help entertain the children, and stay overnight to provide comfort and peace of mind to families who are working towards independence.   To find out more about Family Promise, visit www.familypromise.org.  To volunteer at Whitfield, contact the church office @ 334-281-2467.  Quarterly.

Heavenly Hugs Prayer Shawl Ministry -  ** Now Meeting on Fridays!

Heavenly Hugs are handmade prayer shawls for those on our prayer list who need an extra reminder that they are being prayed over.  The women involved in this ministry meet twice a month to knit, crochet and pray.  Each shawl contains yards of yarn, hours of prayers, and an immeasurable amount of love and compassion.  Join us on 1st & 3rd Mondays at 10:00 a.m., in the Sheppard Center.  Fridays, Noon.  Come and share lunch with us.

Sew 'N Sews -

If you are handy with a needle and thread, then our quilting ministry is for you.  These ladies keep their fingers busy by making quilts for mission fundraisers, baby quilts, placemats & other items for our Christmas auction.  This winter, they are making lap robes for residents at the Veterans' Hospital.  Join us on Friday mornings, 10 AM, in the Sheppard Center.

Sarah's Merry Elders -  Currently Inactive

This group of savvy senior singers bring cheer and joy to residents in our local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  Every week you can find our Merry Elders singing hymns, patriotic tunes and the oldies but goodies somewhere in town.  If you're interested in singing with us, call the church office and leave a message for Jack Reed, director.

United Methodist Women Missions -

Our local UMW always has a mission project going.  School Supply and Food Drives are on-going at Whitfield.  Collection boxes can always be found in the Sheppard Center for such items.  The annual UMW Missions Auction is held each November to raise funds for local mission projects.  Our United Methodist Women are active in studies and church activities, as well as missions.  To join a circle or donate to their projects, contact the church office (334-281-2467) and leave a message for Jackie Sheppard, 2013 UMW President.

Good Samaritan Thanksgiving Boxes - this program has been discontinued from the Dept. Human Services

Each year, Whitfield opens the doors of our Sheppard Center to house the Good Samaritan food distribution for Thanksgiving.  Non-perishable food donations are brought from collection points throughout Montgomery, boxed up for families in need, and distributed in time for the holidays.  Working with DHR, the Red Cross, and corporate sponsors, we provide workers, donations and hospitality.  Seasonal - Beginning the Sunday before Thanksgiving through Tuesday pick up.

White Christmas Offering -

Whitfield UMC proudly supports the United Methodist Children's Homes with their special White Christmas offering.  UMCH houses hundreds of children in group homes, provides counseling and support for families in crisis, and provides school supplies and other necessities for children in need throughout the year.  Please consider a generous gift to the White Christmas offering this year.  Help our world by helping a child.  White Christmas offering is collected during the month of December, however, a donation can be made at any time by simply designating it for the UMCH, United Methodist Children's Homes.
